Discover Kimbo Cafe - Mylonas Bakery

If you’re strolling along El. Venizelou 114, Stalida 700 07, Greece, there’s a good chance the scent of freshly baked bread will guide you straight to Kimbo Cafe - Mylonas Bakery. I found it on a warm Cretan morning while looking for a quick coffee, and instead, I ended up staying for nearly two hours. That alone says a lot.

The first thing you notice is the display counter-lined with golden pies, sesame-crusted koulouri, syrupy pastries, and rustic loaves that look like they’ve come straight from a wood-fired oven. This isn’t just a café; it’s a proper Greek bakery-diner hybrid where locals pop in daily. During my visit, I watched at least five regulars greeted by name. That kind of familiarity doesn’t happen by accident.

I ordered a classic freddo cappuccino and a slice of spanakopita. The coffee was strong yet smooth, with a balanced crema and just the right chill. Greece takes its coffee culture seriously, and according to the Specialty Coffee Association, consistency in grind size and extraction time directly affects flavor clarity. You can tell the baristas here understand that. The milk foam was dense and velvety, not airy or flat, and the espresso didn’t taste burnt-an issue surprisingly common in tourist areas.

The spanakopita deserves special mention. The phyllo pastry was crisp and layered, not greasy. Inside, the spinach and feta mixture was flavorful without being salty. Traditional Greek bakeries rely on high-quality feta made from sheep’s milk, often protected under PDO standards set by the European Union. The creamy tang and fresh herbs in this pie reflected that authenticity. It tasted homemade, not mass-produced.

Their menu extends far beyond pies. You’ll find breakfast plates, sandwiches stacked with local ham and cheese, sweet bougatsa dusted with powdered sugar, and cakes that look almost too pretty to cut. One afternoon, I returned to try their custard-filled croissant and a slice of chocolate cake. The custard was rich and smooth, with real vanilla flavor instead of artificial sweetness. The chocolate cake, meanwhile, was dense but moist-something pastry chefs achieve by carefully balancing fat content and baking time to prevent dryness.

What stands out about this location in Stalida is its balance between tourist accessibility and local credibility. Many seaside cafés lean heavily into convenience food, but here you get something closer to authentic Cretan bakery tradition. The baking process appears consistent with what the Hellenic Food Authority recommends for artisanal production: small batches, daily preparation, and proper storage to maintain freshness. While I can’t confirm every step behind the scenes, the flavor and texture strongly suggest daily baking rather than frozen imports.

The seating area is casual and comfortable. You can sit outside and watch the life of Stalida unfold-families heading to the beach, scooters passing by, delivery vans unloading fresh supplies. Inside, the atmosphere feels simple and welcoming, without trying too hard to impress. Clean tables, organized displays, and friendly service build trust quickly. Hygiene standards matter, especially in warm coastal climates, and everything appeared well maintained during my visits.

Online reviews often highlight the friendly staff and reasonable prices. From my own experience, I’d agree. Compared to other cafés along the same road, the portions are generous and the pricing fair. For travelers managing a holiday budget, that combination makes a difference. At the same time, locals seem to rely on it for everyday bread and takeaway coffee, which says more than any five-star rating.

It’s also worth noting that bakery culture in Greece is deeply rooted in daily life. Bread is not just a side item; it’s central to meals. Seeing residents pick up fresh loaves in the morning reinforces that this spot functions as a community hub, not just a tourist stop. That authenticity adds weight to its reputation.

If you value fresh pastries, well-prepared coffee, and a relaxed diner-style setting in the heart of Stalida, this bakery café delivers a genuine experience. The combination of traditional recipes, careful preparation, and warm service makes it easy to return-whether for a quick espresso or a slow breakfast under the Cretan sun.

  • Number one (1) place in STALIS for the BEST COFFEE, (try out capuccino). The Greek pies taste good (try out spanakotiropita), fresh bread and free wifi. And of course they deliver your coffee at your place no extra charge. Sometimes with every coffee you buy they offer you a small bottle of water, ask them if the offer is valid.
